 Badminton by-laws for the SCAC

a)      Format and league play

A school will express its intent to participate two weeks prior to the start of the league. Official registration deadline (completed form with names of athletes

per event) will be determined by the convenor.

An athlete may participate in only one event and cannot participate in both the JV and Varsity leagues.

Upon registration in the league, a school commits to hosting its share of the meets according to submitted hosting dates.

The Varsity and Junior Varsity leagues are mandatory in that athletes or entries are awarded points towards the championship at every meet attended (on a one point per win basis with the top eight entries advancing to the championships).

Schools are allowed 4 entries per event. League format is pool play with the top eight from the pool advancing.; if less than ten entries, a double-round will de played; from ten to twenty some entries, a single round will be played; if over twenty- five entries, two pools will be created with the top four advancing from each.

Athletes absent from competition will record a loss against all opponents scheduled for that evening. These accumulated points (win-loss record in pool play) determine the eventual top 8 finishers in each event.

The eight finalists participate in the zone play-offs. For Varsity, the top two advance to the provincial championship.

The Varsity league runs on Wednesdays (with possible Mondays) in April with play starting at 4:30 pm, for a period of up to 3 weeks. The top eight finishers in each event during league play advance to the championship round. Championships are hosted on the last Wednesday in April (one week prior to Provincial Championships).

The Junior Varsity league runs on Tuesdays (with possible Thursdays) in April with play starting at 4:30 pm, for a period of up to 3 weeks. The top eight finishers in each event during league play advance to the championship round. Championships are hosted on the last Tuesday in April (the day before the varsity championships).

Athletes should register on site, in person, by 4:15 to be eligible for play.

School convenors will receive updated tournament draws with specific game numbers to be played that evening. Results must be sent by e-mail by 9:00 a.m the following morning.

b)      Championships and scoring

Both Varsity and JV championships will feature a double-elimination tournament format with games to determine all positions from 1st to 8th.  A school is responsible for advising the convenor if his players can not participate in the championships at which time the school with the next best record will be given that spot ( ie. 9th would get 8th for 1 pool, 5th would get 4th for 2 pools) and all rankings would be adjusted accordingly.

Top three finishers will be awarded ribbons and the top two Varsity finishers per event advance to the Provincial Championships.

A championship banner will be awarded to the school with most points.

Team scoring for the zone championship is as follows:

1st- 8 points   2nd- 7 points   3rd-6 points   4th-5 points    5th-4 points   6th- 3points   7th-2 points   8th-1 point

c)      Officiating

Matches will respect the honour system, as no official will oversee a match. In case of disagreement, a match should be stopped and the site convenor may resolve the situation by appointing an official if necessary.

The score of a game that has been terminated will stand.
